I was fortunate enough to finally obtain my
"Golly" (Multi-Ch. Co-R’s Galway Bay O’Blu Max CD JH) offspring from
Betty and Jarl Wathne of Madcap Irish Water Spaniels. I was invited to
be present at the whelping of Breezer’s litter, which was my first. The
little tank of a girl who came home with me taught me many lessons.
Through Betty, I was fortunate to begin training with Sylvia Bishop.
That relationship continues to this day. It was with Breezer that I
learned many of the foundational skills necessary for long term
obedience competition. She was my introduction to agility, earning an OA
and an OAJ. She had two legs on a number of other levels. She earned two
legs on her utility title, two legs on a Rally title. At the age of 11,
it became apparent that she was no longer enjoying the work. Having
learned the art of teamwork with Breezer, it isn’t possible to continue
if both members’ hearts aren’t in it. So, we stopped. This was one of
the hardest lessons I have learned in dog training.
Breezer was no slouch in the conformation ring. She
was the Puppy Sweepstakes Winner at the 1995 specialty and her brother,
Bramble the Best of Opposite. Everything with Breezer was a negotiation.
Bred only once, she was recognized as a Top Producer by the IWSCA. She
participated in a number of freestyle exhibitions. Her most memorable
number was performed to a song by New Radicals entitled "You Get What
You Give". I think the title sums up Breezer’s personality really well.
